About Michelle
Michelle is the co-owner and founder of ABLE United. She was born with a visual impairment that cannot be cured. Michelle heard the word "no" a lot throughout her childhood and teenage years. She was often told she could not succeed due to her disability. Michelle has taken every opportunity to dispel the myth of disability being a lack of ability
My Story
Michelle graduated hi school in 2011 and began working in the hospitality industry. She soon realized this was not what she wanted to do with her life but was unsure of an academic pathway. In 2015, Michelle was accepted and enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts program at the University of British Columbia. She graduated in 2019 with a major in psychology and minor in anthropology.
Following her education, Michelle quickly obtained employment with the provincial government, beginning work with the Employment Standards Branch in 2019. She acted as a subject matter expert, enhancing the Branches public facing web content, ensuring it was readable, in a grounded font, with gender neutral language, close captioned videos and had alternate text on the photos. She also obtained a position as an athlete on the national para-judo team in 2019.
In 2021, Michelle bought her first home in the Okanagan and in 2022, she left the national judo team after many successes at the national and international level. Although she still competes, it is now only for fun, ash she has chosen to focus more on family and career.
In 2023, Michelle and Jordan got engaged and while planning their wedding. With the support of her new partner, Jordan, Michelle had become more accepting of her disability, and willing to use assistive technology and devices. She was also realizing it was far from easy to obtain such assistance, both in employment and in aspects of event planning. In the spring of 2924, Michelle put in an application to participate in an entrepreneurial program, as well as an application to Okanagan College to obtain certification in basic accounting and bookkeeping. She was accepted into both programs, and in October of 2024, had officially launched her new business, Accessible Best Life Experience United - ABLE U.
